Big Seventh Lifts Mavs into First in Horner's Finale
July 31, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
With a chance to pull into a first place tie and send outgoing manager Jim Horner off with a win, the Mavs scored five times to break a tie in the seventh and beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 11-7 Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.
Earlier in the day, Horner publicly announced he would be leaving the Mavericks and the Seattle Mariners to join the coaching staff at Texas Tech University. The all-time winningest manager in team history, Horner finished with a 195-182 record in the High Desert.
After the Quakes had tied the game in the top of the seventh, the Mavs responded with a five spot in the bottom of the inning. An error by pitcher Kyle Hurst (1-2) put two on with none out. Eddy Martinez-Esteve then blooped a single into center to break the tie.
Rich Poythress followed with a two-run homer to give the Mavs some breathing room. Poythress also collected a double and a pair of walks, scoring four times.
Kyle Seager finished the rally with a two-out RBI single to put the Mavs ahead 11-6.
Both teams traded runs for most of the night. Eric Oliver opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the inning, but the Mavs responded with Johermyn Chavez sac fly in their next at bat.
Rancho Cucamonga scored twice with two outs in the third, getting an RBI double by Gabe Jacobo and an RBI bunt single by Clay Fuller.
The Mavs took their first lead in the fourth. Two walks, an error, and a wild pitch helped the Mavericks get within one. Kuo Hui Lo doubled to center field to plate two more and put the Mavs ahead 4-3.
Angel Castillo homered in the sixth to tie the game, but Chavez would hit a two-run homer to give the Mavs the lead again.
The Mavs tried to stretch out starting pitcher Jon Hesketh in the seventh, but the move backfired. Hesketh walked Darwin Perez and gave up a game-tying homer to Luis Jimenez.
Although that spelled the end for Hesketh, Blake Nation (4-4) followed with two scoreless innings to pick up the win.
As Horner's tenure ends, the Darrin Garner era will begin Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when the Mavs face the Quakes on Backwards Night at Mavericks Stadium. The Mavericks will be wearing special backwards jerseys up for auction, and all in-game promotions will be done in reverse order. For tickets, call 246-MAVS or order online at www.hdmavs.com.
