Big Inning Lifts Bakersfield Past Lancaster

(LANCASTER, CA) - Bakersfield struck for four runs in the top of the sixth and never looked back as the Blaze defeated Lancaster 10-5 in the opener of a three-game series at Clear Channel Stadium Friday. The JetHawks and Blaze traded leads through the first five frames. Lancaster opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Bakersfield answered with runs in the second and third before the JetHawks knotted the score at 3-3 on a two-run homer from Lee Cruz.

After Bakersfield tied the score in the top of the fourth, Lancaster reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs off Blaze starter Wilfredo Boscan. Federico Hernandez ripped an RBI triple - his fourth triple of the season - that plated Brian Pellegrini. Moments later, Hernandez scored on a passed ball from Blaze catcher Doug Hogan and the JetHawks took a 5-3 lead.

Trailing 5-4 in the sixth, the Blaze scored four runs off JetHawks starter Patrick Urckfitz and reliever Jose Trinidad. Tommy Mendonca and Andres James delivered RBI singles in the frame and Bakersfield got a sacrifice fly from Erik Morrison and an RBI groundout from Jacob Kaase. Three of the runs were charged to Urckfitz (4-7), who allowed eight hits and seven runs, including six earned runs, in the contest.

Hernandez and Albert Cartwright each went 3-for-4 for Lancaster. Boscan (8-9) earned the win for Bakersfield despite allowing 11 hits and five earned runs in seven innings pitched.

With the win, the Blaze improved to 23-12 in the second half and 52-53 overall. The JetHawks fell to 14-21 in the second half and 37-68 overall.

The JetHawks will meet Bakersfield again on Saturday night at Clear Channel Stadium. Lancaster will start right-hander Leandro Cespedes (2-3, 4.78 ERA). The Blaze are expected to counter with right-hander Carlos Pimentel (6-6, 4.65 ERA).
