Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Adelanto, CA - The High Desert Mavericks moved into a first-place tie with the Quakes, downing Rancho Cucamonga by a final of 11-7 on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium.

A five-run seventh put High Desert ahead to stay, as they took the opening game of the three-game set, ending Rancho Cucamonga's three-game winning streak.

Eddie Martinez-Esteve knocked in the go-ahead run, starting the five-run explosion against Quakes' reliever Kyle Hurst (1-2) to make it a 7-6 High Desert lead. Rich Poythress followed with a three-run blast, his 22nd of the year to make it 10-6. Kyle Seager capped the inning with an RBI single, as he knocked in Johermyn Chavez to make it 11-6.

The Quakes got a run in the ninth off Mavs' closer Wes Littleton, thanks to an Angel Castillo sac fly, cutting the deficit to four at 11-7. But with the tying run in the on-deck circle and two outs, pinch hitter Dillon Baird grounded to short to end the game.

The Quakes pounded out 14 hits on the night and looked to be in control early against High Desert starter Jon Hesketh. Eric Oliver doubled home a run in the second inning to put the Quakes up 1-0.

After the Mavs tied the game in the bottom of the second, Gabe Jacobo and Clay Fuller had run-scoring hits in the third, giving the Quakes a two-run advantage at 3-1.

High Desert scored three times in the fourth, taking advantage of some wildness by Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee. Chaffee walked a pair of hitters to start the fourth inning, then was burned by an error, as the Mavs took a 4-3 lead.

Castillo homered to even the game in the sixth, his 14th of the year, tying the game at 4-4.

After the Mavs took the lead in the sixth on a two-run Chavez homer, Jimenez answered with a two-run shot for the Quakes, his seventh of the year, tying the game at 6-6 and chasing Hesketh from the game.

High Desert reliever Blake Nation (4-4) worked two scoreless innings of relief for the win.

The loss for Rancho Cucamonga ends their three-game winning streak and leaves both the Quakes and Mavs with identical second-half records at 20-15.

Garrett Richards (0-0) will make his Quakes' debut on Saturday night, in the second game of the three-game series in Adelanto. The Mavs will answer with Kenn Kasparek (7-2), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.

On Tuesday, August 3rd, the Quakes will return to The Epicenter, taking on the Lake Elsinore Storm in the opening game of a six-game home stand. The upcoming home stand includes $1 Family Feast Night and Faith Night, coming up on Friday, August 6th. Great seats are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or get them online at rcquakes.com.
