Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, VT - Keene put four runs on the board quickly in the top of the second inning against Vermont, giving them a 4-2 lead at the time. They wouldn't surrender the lead after that, taking the game against the Mountaineers 6-3.
Vermont got things going in the bottom half of the second, courtesy of the long ball. Nolan Tressler (Statesboro, GA/ Georgia Southern) and Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia) hit back to back home runs, giving Vermont the 2-0 lead.
But in the top of the third, Keene answered for four runs off Vermont starter Ross Mintzer (Wyndmoor, PA/ Lock Haven). Mitchell Golden (Marietta, GA/ Georgia Southern) led off the inning with a single, and came around to score on Jacob Koos' (Wellington, FL/ Stetson) RBI double. Following a hit by pitch, Brandon Smith (Georgetown, IN/ Dayton) sent a ball off the top of the fence in right center field and bounced over the fence for his eighth homerun on the season, giving Keene the 4-2 lead.
They wouldn't turn over the lead from there, as they added one in the fifth and the seventh, taking the game 6-3. The win went to Erick Zecha (Keene, NH/ RPI), who went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out five. Andrew Houde (Newport, NH/ Keene State) picked up the save for the Swamp Bats, throwing three scoreless innings out of the pen.
One of the lone bright spots for the Mountaineers was Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi), who went 2-4 with two doubles in the loss.
Vermont (10-17) now falls to eight games back of first place Valley (17-8), and sit 4.5 games back of Sanford (13-11), who currently hold the third and final spot of the playoffs as of right now. The Mountaineers will took to rebound Wednesday when they host Winnipesaukee (8-19) at Recreation Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
