SANFORD, ME - Brandon Smith (Dayton) delivered a go-ahead triple in the top of the 10th inning as the Keene SwampBats (15-12) won their fourth straight with a 5-3 victory over the Sanford Mainers (13-11) on Monday night at Goodall Park in Sanford.
In the top of the 10th, Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern) drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a Jacob Koos (Stetson) groundout and Michael Woodworth (UConn) was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Smith's clutch triple.
RHP John Murphy (Maryland) allowed the two runs on two hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in 1.1 IP and was dealt the loss for the Mainers, dropping to 1-1.
RHP Justin Willis (Vanderbilt) walked three and fanned six over 3.1 shutout IP to earn the win for the SwampBats and improve to 3-1.
Sanford had the bases loaded and two outs with the game tied at three apiece in the bottom of the ninth, but Willis fanned Johnny Rizer (TCU) to end the inning.
The SwampBats have won a season-high four straight and seven of their last eight. Manager Lyndon Coleman's squad has come from behind in each of the four victories.
Sanford grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as a pair of singles put two men on before Rizer knocked in a run via an RBI groundout and a passed ball allowed the second run to score in the inning.
Keene starter Colby Dunlop (UConn) surrendered two runs on four hits while walking two and fanning six over 5.0 IP in a no-decision.
In the top of the fifth, Alex Carballo (Kennesaw State) doubled, went to third on a single and scored on an RBI groundout from Rudy Aguilar (St. John's) to cut the lead to 2-1.
Mainers starter Dylan Hall (Virginia Tech) gave up one run on three hits to go along with five strikeouts over 4.2 IP in a no-decision.
Koos and Woodworth drew consecutive walks in the second, executed a double steal and both runners scored on a two-run single from Cordell Dunn Jr. (Grayson) to give Keene a 3-2 lead for the time being.
The Mainers tied the game with a run in the seventh when Austin Biggar (Georgia) reached with a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Austin Lively (Seattle U).
Lorenzo Hampton (FIU) was 2-5 and Smith (2-4, 2 RBI) also had a multi-hit games for the SwampBats.
The SwampBats head to Vermont to battle the Mountaineers on Tuesday night. First pitch from Montpelier Recreation Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
