Keene Swamp Bats News Release

MONTPELIER, V.T.- Brandon Smith (Dayton) had a 4 RBI day, including a go-ahead three run homer in the top of the third inning, as the Keene SwampBats (16-12) won their fifth straight with a 6-3 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers (10-17).

The SwampBats have won five straight and eight of their last nine.

In the afore-mentioned top of the third, an RBI double from Jacob Koos (Stetson) and a hit by pitch set the stage for Smith's home run.

Smith has a team-leading eight home runs and leads the NECBL with 37 RBI, 14 more than any other player.

Mountaineers starter Ross Mintzer (Lock Haven) surrendered four runs on seven hits in three plus innings and was dealt the loss, dropping to 0-5.

Vermont opened the scoring on back-to-back home runs by Nolan Tressler (Georgia Southern) and Liam McGill (Columbia) in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead.

Smith followed the homerun with an RBI groundout that scored Michael Woodworth (UConn) in the top of the fifth inning making the score 5-2.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth by Vermont's Samuel Duran (Nova Southeastern) cut the lead deficit to 5-3.

Koos led off the seventh with a single, went to second on a sac bunt, stole third and scored on Cordell Dunn Jr.'s (Grayson College) RBI single to extend the SwampBats lead to 6-3.

Making his first start of the summer, RHP Erick Zecha (RPI) surrendered three runs (two earned) on seven hits to go along with a walk and five strikeouts in 6.0 IP to earn the win for Keene and even his record at 1-1. RHP Andrew Houde (Keene State) surrendered two hits while walking one and fanning two over three shutout frames to earn his first save.

Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern-3-4, R), Koos (3-5, 2B, RBI, 2 SB, 2 R) and Smith (2-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, R) had multi-hit games for the SwampBats. The SwampBats return home on Wednesday, July 11th against the Upper Valley Nighthawks.
