Big Right-Handers Return to Pitching Staff

WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed right-handed pitchers Duke von Schamann and Cameron McVey on Monday afternoon.

von Schamann was 8-7 with a 4.87 ERA in 20 starts and two relief appearances last year. von Schamann struck out 66 batters in 116.1 innings pitched while allowing just eight home runs and 23 walks. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native walked two batters or less in 18 of his 20 starts, and walked three or less in all of them. von Schamann also pitched into the sixth inning 16 times. The 25-year-old right-hander had the sixth best walk rate in the American Association (1.8 walks per nine innings, minimum 100.0 innings) and ranked first among Goldeyes' starting pitchers in throwing first pitch strikes (63%).

"I know from a statistical standpoint 2016 didn't go as well as Duke would have liked, and I feel like there were many key reasons for that," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "Duke is a good, durable starting pitcher and a great teammate. I look for him to rebound, win 10 games, and throw 125.0 innings for us."

von Schamann is 36-29 with one save and a 4.48 ERA over five professional seasons in 84 starts and 12 relief appearances. 2016 marked the third time in the past four seasons in which the 6-foot-5, 220-pound von Schamann topped 100.0 innings. von Schamann was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 15th round in 2012 out of Texas Tech University (Lubbock, Texas). After missing his true freshman season due to Tommy John Surgery, von Schamann was a combined 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA for the Red Raiders from 2011-12. Early in the 2014 season, von Schamann was traded from the Dodgers to the Cleveland Indians' organization in exchange for Major League pitcher Colt Hynes. von Schamann reached the Double-A level in each of his first four professional seasons, and has averaged just 2.2 walks per nine innings during his career.

McVey has been one of the most effective relievers in the American Association the last two years. In 2016, McVey was 2-2 with two saves and a 3.41 ERA for Winnipeg in 39 relief appearances. The Glendora, California native struck out 41, walked 16, and allowed just one home run in 37.0 innings pitched. It marked the fourth consecutive year in which McVey finished with more strikeouts than innings. The 28-year-old McVey did not allow an earned run in 31 of his 39 outings.

"Cameron was a very important piece to our bullpen last year," said Forney. "In 2017, I'm hoping Cameron can take his game to a new level. If he can be a little more consistent from outing to outing, he has the ability to be one of the top late-inning relievers in the league."

McVey was drafted by the San Francisco Giants as a 22nd-round pick out of Biola University (La Mirada, California) in 2011. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-hander has a career 9-9 record with six saves and a 3.74 ERA in 131 relief appearances over five professional seasons. McVey has averaged an impressive 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings during his career. In 2015, McVey posted a 2.81 ERA in 36 games for the Sioux Falls Canaries while striking out 41 batters in 41.2 frames.

"I'm very pleased to have both Duke and Cameron coming back," said Forney. "They were both key contributors to our club last season, and I expect they will be again."

The Goldeyes now have 11 players under contract for the 2017 season, including nine from their 2016 championship roster. American Association clubs may carry up to 27 players during spring training, which begins May 6th.

Notes: von Schamann was one of four Goldeyes' starters to reach 100.0 or more innings pitched...Edwin Carl, Mikey O'Brien, and Kevin McGovern were the other three...it was the first time since 2008 in which the Goldeyes had four different pitchers achieve triple digit innings...von Schamann's father, Uwe von Schamann, played six years in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins as a placekicker, including a 10-point performance in Super Bowl XIX...in 84 career starts, von Schamann has walked more than three batters just four times...prior to Biola University, McVey also pitched at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, California...although he is a right-handed pitcher, McVey has been very effective against left-handed batters, holding them to a .212 average in his career...right-handed batters have hit just .228 against McVey...McVey has been especially tough in clutch situations, holding the opposition to a .198 mark with two outs and runners in scoring position
