Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - Despite possibly the best pitching performance of the season by a Danville starting pitcher, the D-Braves could not get a victory over Pulaski. Pulaski scored all four runs in the ninth inning to pull ahead of Danville and the Mariners would not look back, defeating the Braves 4-3.
It was an ominous start to the top of the ninth for Danville, as Dustin Emmons who was in in his second inning of relief gave up a line drive up the middle to Taylor Zeutenhorst, that appeared to tag Emmons on his throwing hand. With the leadoff man on, Miranda would replace Emmons with the apparent injury.
In a pinch hit situation and Miranda's first batter faced, Georvic Perez hit a two-run home run to right to make it a 3-2 ball game. A one-out walk for Tom Verdi put a man on for Estarlyn Morales, who singled to left. An errant throw from Jose Morel that reached the backstop behind home plate would allow pinch runner Arby Fields tie the game at three, and Morales to reach third on the error. In the next at bat, Jay Baum singled off of Miranda, allowing Morales to touch home and give Pulaski a 4-3 lead.
Oriel Caicedo made his first start for the Danville Braves Sunday, and it was impressive to say the least. The left hander from Panama went 7.0 shutout innings, a career high, faced 22 batters only allowing two hits and a walk, two of which were negated by double plays. Caicedo pitched to contact very well, striking out four batters while keeping the Pulaski lineup guessing as he painted the corners.
Ozzy Albies, standing 5'9" 150 lbs at 17 years old, crushed his first professional home run during the contest, a solo shot to left center. Albies has been turning heads of fans and scouts alike with his electrifying play offensively and defensively, and certainly provided the spark for Danville today. Albies finished the game 2-5 with the home run, an RBI, run scored, and put in great defensive work at shortstop for the D-Braves. Albies is hitting .389 with 12 RBI in 26 games with Danville this season.
The Danville Braves (33-23) are back in action tomorrow, set to face the Pulaski Mariners (30-25) in the second game of a three-game set that has very high playoff implications. Andrew Waszak (2-6, 4.73) will take the mound for first place Danville, while Daniel Missaki (4-2, 2.57) will get the start for third place Pulaski in the pitching matchup. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first pitch at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
