"Big Play" Curvey Joins Barnstormers

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Barnstormers Head Coach John Gregory today announced former Iowa State University defensive tackle Brent "Big Play" Curvey has joined the team's 2009 active roster and is expected to play in Saturday's road game against the undefeated Spokane Shock.

Curvey, who played for the Big 12 Cyclones from 2003-2006, was signed to replace DL Jason Ripke, who was placed on injured reserve and is out for the season following an injury in the April 25 game against Quad City.

"As Cyclone fans remember, Curvey is an impact player and will immediately bolster the Barnstormers defensive line," said Coach Gregory. "We are excited to get him on the field."

Prior to joining the Barnstormers, Curvey played the 2007 and 2008 seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Following his collegiate career, Curvey did sign as an undrafted free agent with the National Football League's Carolina Panthers in 2007, but failed to make the NFL team's final roster.

The Houston, Texas native recorded 222 tackles and 16 sacks at Iowa State while earning multiple honors that include: Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors (2004, 2006); Second-Team All-Big 12 (2005); co-recipient of ISU's 2004 and 2005 Arthur Floyd Scott award (outstanding defensive lineman); co-recipient of 2005 Al and Dean Knudson Award (outstanding defensive player); and, being named to the 2006 Outland Trophy preseason "watch list."

This week, the Barnstormers (3-2) travel to the west coast for a 9:05 p.m. (Iowa time) Saturday match-up with the Spokane Shock (4-0).
