Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Clearwater Threshers pounded out five extra-base hits on Tuesday, but fell to the Daytona Cubs, 18-5 at Brighthouse Field.
The Threshers (3-15) got on the board early against Cubs' starter Tayler Scott (2-2) with two runs in the first and one in the second.
K.C. Serna roped a one-out triple to left field and would come around to score when Pete Lavin doubled to right. Art Charles drove in Lavin after he hit a hot shot that got by Cubs' first baseman Rock Shoulders.
Clearwater was back at it again in the second inning after Logan Moore led off the frame with a double. Moore would advance to third on an Angelo Mora fly out to left field. Malquin Canelo followed with a walk to put runners on the corners for the Threshers.
With Brian Pointer batting, Scott uncorked a ball in the dirt that got away from catcher Chadd Krist. Krist threw wildly down to first base to try to catch Canelo off the bag, but the ball went into right field, allowing Moore to trot home for the Threshers' third run.
Miguel Nunez (1-2) was effective through the first two innings, allowing no runs on two hits, before being knocked out in the fourth.
Daytona (5-13) would score a flurry of runs during the third through sixth innings, sandwiching four-run innings in the fourth and fifth between three-run innings in the third and sixth. The Cubs would also add four more off of a Shoulders' grand slam in the ninth.
Clearwater tacked on runs in the eighth and ninth off of RBIs by Jesus Posso and Charles.
Posso, who entered the game defensively in place of Moore behind the plate, ripped the first pitch he saw deep to the left-centerfield gap for an RBI double in the eighth inning. Posso was 1-for-1 in his Clearwater Threshers debut.
Charles added a run for Clearwater in the ninth, lining a run-scoring single to right with two outs to make it an 18-5 ballgame.
The Threshers send Jeb Stefan (0-1) to the mound in hopes of avoiding the sweep Wednesday afternoon for a 1 p.m matinee. The game can be heard online at threshersbaseball.com with Threshers Live! the pregame show starting at 12:45 p.m.
