Big inning gives Frisco inaugural win over Round Rock
May 30, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Things were going dandy for the Round Rock Express through five innings. Starter James Lira had settled down and the bats had just put up three runs. Then came the sixth. The Frisco RoughRiders scored five times on two hits and four walks in the sixth to boost them to an 8-4 win in front of 11,522 at The Dell Diamond and take the first game ever between the two franchises.
The Express took advantage of some wildness by starter Edwin Moreno themselves in the fifth. Moreno walked John Tamargo with the bases loaded to tie the game, 2-2. That was followed by an RBI single by Tommy Whiteman and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Acevedo to stake Round Rock to a 4-2 lead.
However, the RoughRiders answered shortly after. Taking advantage of a struggling Jory Coughenour, Frisco scored their five runs on a single, two bases loaded walks and a fielder's choice.
Lira, making only his second start, was mostly effective. He allowed a pair of runs on six hits in five innings, his longest outing of the season. Tommy Whiteman was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Coughenour (2-3) was the loser and Keith Stamler (3-4) got the win in relief of Moreno.
The teams will continue a four-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
