Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDINBURG - The Edinburg Roadrunners scored 12 runs in the fourth inning to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 16-11 in seven innings of Game 1 of a doubleheader on Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-22) trailed 3-2 with one out in the bottom of the fourth when 13-straight batters reached base. Brandon Wilkerson knocked in the first two with a triple to knock out Chase Davenport (3-3). Wanel Vasquez Mesa, the nephew of ex-big league Jose Mesa, who was signed earlier in the day, did not record an out in his debut as he allowed all 10 batters he faced to reach, nine of whom scored. C.J. Beatty hit his seventh home run, and after a walk and a hit batsman, Osiel Flores and Stantrel Smith hit back-to-back RBI-singles. Welington Dotel followed with his fourth home run, a three-run shot. After a double and a walk, Wilkerson hit his third home run, a three-run shot, to cap the inning.
The WhiteWings (21-19) didn't quit, scoring two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the seventh to make it close.
The Roadrunners added two in the bottom of the sixth to complete their scoring.
The Roadrunners put their first five batters on base against Davenport, but only scored one run. Beatty singled, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a double by Robert Matlock. After Gabe Memmert walked, Matlock was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a single by Flores. Smith followed with a single on which Memmert was initially held at third base, but when Flores ended up at third base at the same time, Memmert took off for home. Antonio DeJesus' throw from centerfield was in time, but it bounced away from Gabriel Ortiz, allowing Memmert to score.
Trailed 2-0, the WhiteWings responded in the top of the third against Jorge Quintero (3-4). With one on and one out, David Peralta hit his 10th home run of the season and Leivi Ventura hit his eighth to make it 3-2 WhiteWings.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play Game 2 of this doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
