Big 3rd Period Earns Lone Star Brahmas Split in 4-1 Win

Friday night saw the Lone Star Brahmas suffer a loss to the Wenatchee Wild despite a valiant comeback effort. After falling behind by three the boys in purple and black pulled themselves back to within one goal, but could not get the equalizer.

Just as they had last night, the Brahmas opened the scoring in the first. Chad Guderianpicked off the puck in front of Jake Kupsky and went barreling down the near side into the rightwing circle before firing a shot off of Zach Quinn's chest. The rebound came back out front for Liam Stirtzinger who was trailing the play to put back under the Wild netminder at the 8:18 mark. With just over five minutes to go in the period August Von Ungern-Sternberg caught up with a loose puck in the neutral zone and went streaking into the Brahmas' zone. Johan Steen stepped up and rode him deep running the speedy Wild forward out shooting room.

Early in the second, the Wild did a fantastic job of keeping the play alive behind Kupsky's net. The puck bounced out on the near side where David Powlowski found it and flipped it past Kupsky stick side. Time of the unassisted goal was 2:01. Moments later with the Wild on the power play Ryan Chaisonsent the puck from the top of the far circle to Jake Ahlgren on the backdoor. Kupsky made a big push to go post to post and deny the point blank shot.

Sebastian Vidmar had the top corner picked with the Brahmas two minutes into five minute major power play, but Quinn made a miraculous glove save to preserve the 1 - 1 tie.

Lone Star went up one 8:16 into the third off the tape of Hunter Stanley. It was Stanley who got the play started by moving the puck from just inside the Lone Star defensive zone to AJ Vanderbeck at the opposite blueline. As Vanderbeck went in on Quinn, Stanley gave chase and cleaned up Vanderbeck's rebound putting it past the sprawled goalie. The goal by Stanley launched another big third period by Lone Star and at 11:45 they struck again. Vidmar opened it up taking a return pass from Caleb Thompson at the near halfwall and walked it to the near circle before rifling it on net. Oskar Andrenwho had gained position against Chaison in front redirected it past Quinn who had no chance on the play. Only 39 seconds later, off a draw to Kupsky's right Andren controlled the puck in front and sent Vidmar the other way with a break out pass. Vidmar drove into the zone before blowing a tire as he stick handled around Ryan Gotelaere. Gotelaere grabbed the puck and tried to start a Wild rush, but Andren read the play picking the pass cleanly. He drove the net and put the puck five hole on Quinn despite the boxscore crediting the goal to Vidmar.

Wenatchee won the shots on goal battle 23 - 18 and both teams had goose eggs on the power play with the Brahmas being 0 - 4 and the Wild 0 - 5. With the win, Lone Star was able to maintain their tenuous hold on first place in the South Division with two game left to play.
