Berkshire Deflects Rocky Start To Win Series

The Black Bears "MOJO" shined in the seventh inning under the beautiful sky tonight game at Wahconah Park, as Berkshire claimed the rubber game of the series, beating Elmira 6-3.

The Pioneers proved their place as the best offensive team in the Northeast League in the first inning. Cleatus Davidson hit an RBI triple, scoring Dennis Abreu from first. Then Rafael Alvarez smashed the ball over the center fence, his thirteenth long ball of the year, giving the Pioneers 3-0 lead with no outs in the top of the first. The Black Bears quickly returned two runs in the bottom of the inning and would use that momentum to score 6 unanswered. In the fifth inning Pete Paciorek singled to left, scoring Chris Briones and tying this game. In the seventh inning, Mateo led off with a single, then Brady Williams came up to the plate. The switch hitter doubled down the right field line, bringing Mateo around to score from first, giving the Black Bears their first lead of this game, 4-3. Manny Crespo's infield hit down third base line, moving Williams to third and Paciorek grabbed his third RBI of the night with a single to left, scoring Williams from third. Then, Ryan Jones finished off the attack with another run-scoring single to make it 6-3 Black Bears.

Berkshire starter, Rick Guttormson (7-8) picked up the win, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking two over eight innings. The "K-Machine" struck out ten hitters tonight, moving him up to a second place tie with John Kelly of North. Shane Waroff picked up his first save, throwing to the minimum in the ninth inning . Elmira starter, Hatuey Mendoza fell to 5-7 with the loss, allowing six runs on15 hits, with two strikeouts over six and a third innings.
