Berkshire Black Bears News Release

The Black Bears opened a very important three game series with a win against New Jersey 3-2 at Wahconah Park tonight. The Black Bears starter Rick Guttormson repeatedly swept away the New Jersey bats with his nasty slider. The "K-machine" recorded a season high 14 strikeouts over 8.0 innings. The performance gives Guttormson 132 strikeouts on the year and a one "K" lead over North Shore's John Kelly and John Dellinger of Allentown. The right-hander picked up his eighth win, and third in a row, allowing two runs on eight hits.

The Black Bears offense snarled at New Jersey starter Aaron Myers in the fourth inning. Pete Paciorek singled to center field, Chris Briones followed with an infield hit, then Mark Burnett hit an RBI single to right, scoring Paciorek from second to tie the game at 1-1. Brady Williams came through in the clutch, ripping an RBI single to centerfield scoring Briones and Burnett to give the Black Bears a 3-1 edge. The Jackals returned one run in the fifth inning when Chris Rowan's fly ball just cleared the 374 sign in straight-away center, making the score 3-2.

Berkshire closer, Matt Bailie allowed the tying run to reach second base, but then struck out the side, in a dramatic ninth inning performance, to pick up his 13th save this year. Jackals' starter Meyers fell to 8-8 with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits, with seven strikeouts over seven innings. The Black Bears are now 3.5 games behind New Jersey Elmira, who is competing for the second place. In the potential winning relay on the road to the playoffs, the baton will be passed to Dan Henderson (3-9) tomorrow against New Jersey's Chris Keelin (0-3), 7:05 pm at Wahconah Park.
