Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - Bub Bergstrom went 3-5 with a walk and four runs scored while making a potentially game-saving fly-ball double play on defense to get the tying run off the base paths to lead the first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (48-43, 19-22) to an 11-5 victory over the Edinburg Coyotes (41-50, 16-25) tonight at Harlingen Field. The WhiteWings have now won three in a row for the first time in the second half.

Bobby Darling (4-1) pitched four scoreless innings but hit the wall in the ninth with the WhiteWings up 11-5 when Eric Allen led off with a single. Adam Bonner followed with a double and Eddie Wilson hit an RBI-single. Angelo Fermin followed with an RBI-single to knock out Darling. Todd Lutz came in and walked Patrick Gaylord before allowing a two-run double to Amado German to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Derek Benett came in and got triple-crown threat Nelson Teilon to hit a fly-ball to center field. Bergstrom made the catch and fired towards third base where he nailed the speedy German for a double play. Gaylord scored, but that took the tying run off base and Bennett got Rodney Medina to fly out to end the threat and pick up save number 21.

Gaylord's run was the first earned run against Todd Lutz since July 7th, a span of 19.1 innings.

The WhiteWings got on the board right away against Bryan Heaston (3-5) when Bergstrom led off with a single and stole second. One batter later, Miguel Peguero hit his eighth home run of the season to make it 2-0.

The Coyotes responded in grand fashion against Maximino de la Cruz in the second as Teilon singled and one out later Cameron McGuire singled. Allen then launched his third home run of the season, his first as a Coyote, to make it 3-2. Bonner followed with a double and Wilson reached on a fielder's choice. Fermin then hit his first home run to make it 5-2.

The WhiteWings got two back in the bottom of the frame as Ericnardo Padilla and Bergstrom singled with one out. Sam McLain hit a grounder to second that Eric Gonzalez tried throwing to second base, but it went into left field, allowing Padilla to score and Bergstrom to move to third. Peguero followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4 Coyotes.

The WhiteWings took the lead in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Padilla led off with a six-pitch walk and Bergstrom followed with a ten-pitch walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Peguero was intentionally walked to bring up Ryan Fox, who was hit by a pitch to force in a run. A wild pitch sent Bergstrom home and then Brian Nichols drew a walk to re-load the bases. Luany Sanchez hit into a fielder's choice to make it 7-5.

They tacked two more on in the fifth as Padilla and Bergstrom singled with one out. a ten-pitch walk to Sam McLain loaded the bases and knocked out Heaston. Andy Noonan came in and struck out Peguero before giving up a two-run single to Fox to make it 9-5.

In the eighth, Brian Nichols led off with a single against Angel Rocha. Two outs later, Kevin Griffin hit a line drive over the head of a shallow Medina in left field and ended up with an inside-the-park home run to make it 11-5.

The WhiteWings and Coyotes complete the season series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Kenny Evoniuk (2-3) is expected to face Carlos Jan (1-3).
