San Angelo Colts News Release
ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana - The San Angelo Colts (21-21) won their second straight game over the Alexandria Aces (31-12) and guaranteed themselves at least a split of this four-game series by defeating the Aces 9-4 win on Wednesday night at Bringhurst Field.
San Angelo, who posted 15 hits, led the game from start to finish as they took a 4-0 edge six batters into the game. Ronnie Gaines began the contest with a solo home run, his team-leading 18th of the year, off Aces starter Frank James (9-5). Then with one out, the Colts strung together four consecutive hits, including a two-run double by Brett Donahoo and an RBI single by Jason Crosland, who was 3-for-3 and reached base all five times he came up.
Alexandria cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first against Colts starter Caleb Rodgers, who picked up his third straight win to improve to 3-1. With one out, the Aces posted three straight hits, the last of which was a two-run double by Josh Tranum to make it 4-2. San Angelo took a 5-2 advantage in the third when Andres Rodriguez singled home Crosland, who doubled to begin the inning. The Colts had seven extra-base hits on the night, including five doubles and one triple.
Richard Paz hit a solo homer, his 10th of the season, in the third inning to make it a 5-3 game. San Angelo came right back in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead as Rodriguez drove in his 50th run of the year with a single. The Colts first baseman was 4-for-5 with four singles, 2 RBIs, and a run scored. Once again though, the Aces cut the deficit to two runs at 6-4, as Selwyn Langaigne brought home a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth.
The Colts widened their lead and put the game out of reach with a three-run seventh to make it 9-4. Donahho doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a groundout by Chris Mongiardo, who was making his Colts debut. With two outs, Billie Hicks reached on an error by the third baseman Kevin MacIlvane to open the door for two unearned runs. Gaines plated Hicks with his league-leading 10th triple of the year and drove James from the game in the process. Juan Ovalles entered the contest and gave up an RBI single to Joe Rhomberg to make it 9-4.
Rodgers worked six innings, allowing four runs on just five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. At one point, the right-hander retired 10 of 11. James took the loss, as he surrendered nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. Taylor Fleming pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Colts, earning his first professional save as he closed out the victory.
The Colts conclude this four-game set in Alexandria with the series finale against the Aces at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, August 16. The Colts are battling the Aces for seven straight games, as the two teams will also square off in the Colts' final home series from Friday, August 17 through Sunday, August 19.
