Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that forward Ben Gordon has been named the Sher-Wood Hockey ECHL Player of the Week for December 14 through December 20, 2009. Gordon, a second year pro from International Falls, Minnesota, tied a team record with a five point (3g-2a) performance-while playing to a +5-last Wednesday in the Royals' 7-3 win in Johnstown. Gordon also picked up two assists in Reading's 4-3 win over the Elmira Jackals last Friday, and he followed that up by factoring in both goals-scoring one and assisting on the other-in the Royals 2-1 win over the Jackals in Elmira on Saturday. Gordon is currently riding a four game point streak (4g-7a), a four game assist streak (4a), and a four-game multi-point game streak. He leads the Royals with fifteen multi-point performances in twenty-seven games played.
This marks the second time that Gordon, who is currently third in overall scoring in the league (15g-23a38pts), has been selected the ECHL's Player of the Week. He took home those honors shortly after being traded to Reading late last season (March 23 - 29, 2009). Gordon is the first member of the Royals' organization to win the Player of the Week Award twice. This is also the second time this season that a Royal won the weekly award, as Stefano Giliati received the award during the opening week of the season (10/23 - 11/01/09). This marks the tenth time in the nine year history of the team that a Royal has won the ECHL's Player of the Week Award. Other members of the Reading organization to win the ECHL Player of the Week Award include: (i) Brendan Brooks; (ii) Brian McCullough; (iii) Ryan Kinasewich; (iv) Mike Pandolfo; (v) Shay Stephenson; (vi) Greg Hogeboom; and (vii) Chris Blight.
The Royals are off until Saturday (December 26 @ 7:35 pm) when the team returns to First Arena in Elmira New York to take on the Jackals for the third consecutive game. Reading's game night broadcast on Saturday on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off at 7:05 pm.
