Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used four homers including a tying blast by David Medina in the ninth inning and a walk-off tenth-inning double by Pat McKenna to take a come-from-behind 5-4 win in ten innings over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Wednesday night at the Corn Crib. The CornBelters continue their series against the ThunderBolts tomorrow night at The Corn Crib
The ThunderBolts broke the CornBelters streak of scoring first with a pair of runs in the opening frame when Ryan Soares and Mike Torres led off with singles and scored on a two-out base hit up the middle by Doug Joyce.
The CornBelters got one run back in the bottom of the first with a solo home run by McKenna high on the left field berm to cut the Bolts lead to 2-1.
The Belters used the long ball to tie the game with one out in the fifth inning when T.J. Gavlik sent one over the right field fence, only the second hit off Windy City starter Mike Recchia although both hits left the yard.
Windy City grabbed a 3-2 lead with a run in the seventh after a lead-off single by Adam Davis, who moved to third on a sacrifice and a base hit and scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Zach Aakhus.
The CornBelters mustered their third hit off of Recchia to lead off the seventh, but it also was a home run as Steven Felix placed the baseball on the right field berm to tie the game at 3-3.
The Bolts broke the tie in the eighth for a 4-3 lead when Nate Tomaszewski reached with a one-out single, went to third and scored on a throwing error attempting to start a double play.
The Belters sent the game to extra innings on their fourth solo home run of the game, a one-out drive by Medina just over the left center field fence.
Normal started the tenth with a base hit by Santiago Chirino, who moved to second when Mike Schwartz was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for McKenna to lace a one-out double to the left center fence to give the hosts the 5-4 walk-off win.
Alan Oaks (1-0) received the win while Evan DeLuca (0-1) took the loss.
The CornBelters conclude the series with the ThunderBolts on Thursday evening at 7:00.
