Joliet Slammers News Release
Last time out
The Slammers were their own worst enemy Tuesday night as they committed four errors, as both of the runs the Grizzlies scored were unearned in a 2-0 loss. Gateway starter Tucker Jensen was stellar, throwing seven innings, allowing only four hits and striking out nine. It was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings as both Jensen and Slammers' starter Jacob Sanchez kept both teams off the board. In the bottom of the fifth, Jon Myers led off with a double. After Vladimir Frias grounded out to third, Antone DeJesus reached on an error by second baseman Nate Wilder, allowing Myers to score. In the sixth, the Grizzlies added the game's second and last run on a play that included two more Slammers errors. Jacob Sanchez committed an error on a throw to first and first baseman Goose Kallunki followed that mistake by making a poor throw to third, allowing Landon Hernandez to score.
For Starters...
23-year old Corey Kimes, a former star for the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, brings an undefeated record in affiliated ball to Joliet. The Ottawa, IL native went 5-0 in 2012 between the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League and the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. In two seasons of affiliated baseball, Kimes has posted an impressive 3.25 ERA in 22 appearances including six starts. He was an 18th round selection of the Minnesota Twins in the 2011 MLB draft.
Shutout...
The Slammers were shutout for the first time in 2013 last night. They were shutout a total of eight times in 2012.
Erroroneus!
The four errors the Slammers made in last night's game ties the franchise record for most errors committed in one contest.
Getting a chance at the plate...
With a number of Slammers banged up right now, LHP Chuck Lofgren got a plate appearance last night and lined out to center.
May days...
The Slammers have finished .500 or better in May the past two seasons.
Gateway connections...
Joliet manager Mike Breyman played for the Grizzlies from 2004-2008. He was their bench coach in 2009 and hitting coach in 2012. Reliever Jonathan Gonzalez, starter Brett Zawacki and INF Jerod Yakubik all played for the Grizzlies in 2012.
They gone!
The Slammers' pitching staff struck out 14 batters Opening Night, tying the team record for most strikeouts in one game.
A new era...
The Slammers enter the 2013 campaign with an entirely new coaching staff and an almost completely new roster. Manager Mike Breyman enters his first year as the team's skipper while Eric Coleman and Dave Garcia will serve as the team's new pitching and hitting coaches respectively. All three have experience coaching in the Frontier League and Breyman is a former Frontier League Coach of the Year. Coleman has managerial experience in the league with Oakland County. Meanwhile, only six players remain from the 2012 team (Ben Hewett, who played the first part of the year with Joliet, Kyle Maunus, Chase Doremus, Jacob Sanchez, Mike Barsotti and David Christensen). Only Maunus and Hewett remain from the 2011 championship squad.
Injury Report...
OF David Christensen (groin) and LHP David Jensen (shoulder) are currently on the Injured List for Joliet.
