Below Superb As Patriots Beat Barnstormers

June 19, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Duane Below shrugged off a two-run homer by Blake Gailen in the bottom of the first and retired 21 of his final 23 batters on Tuesday evening as the Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers, 7-3, in the middle game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

This decision, combined with Sugar Land's 7-2 win at Long Island, puts both the Barnstormers and the Patriots into a two-game lead in their respective divisions with 16 days of baseball remaining in the first half of the Atlantic League schedule.

Lancaster got off to a flying start with Darian Sandford reaching on an infield single and Gailen following with his blast over the Haller picnic pavilion in right. Below (3-2) walked Trayvon Robinson and sent him to second on a wild pitch before settling down. The Barnstormers would not have another baserunner until one out in the fifth when Anderson De La Rosa doubled inside the third base bag.

Steve Johnson (3-2) held off the Patriots through the first four innings, yielding two singles and three walks over that span. He was not able to survive the fifth.

Yovan Gonzalez led off the inning with a walk and moved up on Mike Fransoso's single to right center. De La Rosa managed to get a force out at third on a bunt by Justin Pacchioli. Julio Borbon picked up the first Somerset run with a single to right. Endy Chavez followed with a double to deep left, scoring two more, and the fourth run of the inning crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Somerset tacked on a run in the eighth, and Kyle Roller launched a two-run homer off the bank of lights in right field in the ninth as the Patriots pulled away.

The Barnstormers were given one last chance in the ninth on a bout of wildness by reliever Logan Kensing who walked the bases loaded. Ryan Kelly entered and hit Vladimir Frias with his second pitch to force home a run and bring De La Rosa to the plate as the tying run. The Lancaster catcher worked the count to full before Kelly got him to ground into a 5-3 double play to close the night.

Somerset and Lancaster will tangle again on Wednesday. The Barnstormers will send lefty Tommy Shirley (3-1) to the hill against Patriots right-hander David Kubiak (2-0). Fans may tune into BRC 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 7:00.

NOTES: Gailen's first inning homer extended his RBI streak to 10 games, the longest in club history...He has eight homers and 21 RBI in the last 14 games...Frias has been hit by a pitch a league leading eight times...John Anderson extended a streak of scoreless innings to 9 2/3...The Barnstormers were held without a stolen base for only the fifth time in 47 games.
