Lexington County Blowfish News Release
THOMASVILLE, NC - The Columbia Blowfish hit the road on Friday night to take on the HiPoint-Thomasville HiToms looking to put themselves back in the win column. After sweeping a doubleheader at Capital City Stadium against Florence, the Blowfish offense fell asleep yesterday in a doubleheader loss to the Forest City Owls.
As it turns out, the Blowfish offense merely traveled to Thomasville a day early. Columbia snatched an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, doing so without recording a hit.
Charleston Southern's Chase Shelton led off the top of the 2nd with a walk. Erik Barber (Central Florida) was hit by a pitch, and a Julian Santos (Bethune-Cookman) fielder's choice put runners on the corners for the Blowfish.
Sean Miller (USC-Aiken) would strike out as the next Blowfish hitter, but a passed ball on the third strike allowed Miller to reach base safely and allowed a run to come home. A wild pitch then plated Santos to score from third base as Columbia took the 2-0 lead.
The Blowfish continued with runs in the top of the third inning, as JD Crowe (Francis Marion) kept the ball rolling with a leadoff single right back up the middle.
Georgia's Michael Bell dug in next and lifted a two run homer over the right-centerfield fence. Nick Pappas, a new reportee for Coach Johnson and the Blowfish from College of Charleston, hit next and lifted a ball high over the fence in right field as the Blowfish put back-to-back jacks in the books that pushed their lead out to 5-0.
Carpin lasted 3.1 innings and allowed just 4 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 batters.
The HiToms got a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 7th as they creeped back to within a run at 5-4 before play was halted in the top of the 8th inning due to some heavy rain.
A steady rain and some lightning in the area kept the game at bay until just past the 10:30 mark of the evening. Field preparations began to get the field back into playable condition, but the two teams would no return to the field.
Play would not resume either, as the game was called. The Blowfish will play at home tomorrow against HiPoint-Thomasville in a 7:05PM first pitch.
