Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TENN. (AUGUST 3, 2014) - Jackson's (19-24, 50-62) bats exploded for 12 runs on 15 hits Sunday, including four long balls as they evened the series with Montgomery (22-22, 57-57) in a 12-3 rout. Jackson's offense was led by Jordy Lara (3x4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB) who notched his first Double-A three-hit game and six Generals recorded multi-hit nights at the plate. The four homers occurred in a game for the first time since Septemeber 2, 2012.
Jackson once again scored early, but this time it was power as Ketel Marte (2x5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI) hit his second home run of the season (both against Montgomery) to lead off the Generals first inning. After a double play by Montgomery, Pat Kivlehan (2x3, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB) homered to left to extend the Jackson lead to 2-0.
The Biscuits tied the game in the third as Willie Argo scored on a groundout by Luke Maile and Cameron Seitzer followed with an RBI single that brought home Kes Carter and the game was tied 2-2.
It did not take Jackson long to re-take the lead as they made starter Grayson Garvin pay for two, two-out walks when Dan Paolini (2x5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI) hit his eighth home run of the season. Kivlehan and Lara both scored and the lead was back in the Generals hands at 5-2.
The top of the fourth saw the Biscuits plate one more as Richie Shaffer scampered home on a scorched base hit by Willie Argo that was nearly caught by third basemen D.J. Peterson (2x5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI).
Jackson's bats exploded again in the sixth inning. They sent 11 batters to the plate, racked up seven hits and scored six runs. Two of those runs scored on Peterson's sixth home run in a Jackson uniform and the Generals had gone deep four times in a game for the first time since September 2, 2012, as they increased their lead to 11-3. Peterson now has a Mariners' organizational-best 24 dingers on the year.
The scoring for the Generals was not quite done as in the eighth, again with two outs Peterson doubled and scored two batters later when Lara doubled for his third hit of the night to make the final score 12-3.
Victor Sanchez (6-4, 3.62) struggled in the third inning, but that was the only inning he did as he went 6.2 quality innings and allowed three runs and scattered eight hits to earn his sixth win this season. It was Sanchez' fifth quality start in his last six starts. Nick Hill (1-1, 6.92) and Richard Vargas (1-2, 4.71) came out of the pen to combine for 2.1 innings of scoreless work to preserve the win. Grayson Garvin (0-6, 3.95) allowed five runs on six hits in 5.0 innings and took the loss the Montgomery as he is still looking for his first Double-A victory.
Everyone in the Jackson lineup had a hit except Dario Pizzano (0x4), as Peterson, Kivlehan, Paolini and Patrick Brady (2x4, R, 2B, RBI) each had two hits to go along with Lara's three-hit game. Also four Generals' - Marte, Kivlehan, Paolini and Peterson all went deep for the first time since Nate Tenbrink, Brad Miller, Joe Dunigan and Denny Almonte achieved the feet against Jacksonville in 2012.
The Generals will look to win their fifth rubber game of the season Monday against the Biscuits. Jackson will send Tyler Pike (2-2, 7.14) to the mound as Victor Mateo (10-7, 3.65) will make the start for Montgomery. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
