Beez Comeback 4-2 Over Rayz, Back In Second

January 23, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees tallied three third period goals to come from behind and defeat the Corpus Christi Rayz 4-2 and move into second place of the Southeast Division in a CHL battle Friday night at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

After a scoreless first period in which the Bees out-shot the Rayz 14-6, Bill Newson gave the Bees a 1-0 lead with a power play goal tallied from the right circle. It was the CHL All-Star's team leading 21st goal of the season. Corpus Christi responded later in the period with a goal by Paul Dunphy. Dunphy was able to send the puck through the neutral zone and reach Rayz captain Ken Richardson, who was streaking past Bees defenders. Richardson was able to attract the defense and send the puck back to Dunphy, who recorded his third goal as member of the Rayz. The Rayz would capitalize on a power play opportunity with 3:07 remaining in the second period, as Brad Wingfield scored his fourth power goal of the year to give the Rayz a 2-1 lead to take into the intermission.

The third period was all Killer Bees, as Ryan Shmyr led the charge with his 8th goal of the season. Newson broke in from the right circle and put a shot on net that got caught up in the five-hole of Greg Hewitt and trickled out from his legs and rested against the right post until Shmyr slammed it into the back of the net to tie the game 2-2. With 5:05 remaining, Bees veteran forward Andrew Taylor stole the puck and cut down the right side of the offensive zone, beating Hewitt and giving the Bees back their lead. The Bees pressure continued, and 17-seconds later Matic Kralj took the puck out of the left corner and centered an unattended Chris Peach, who lit the lamp to give the Bees a 4-2 lead and combine for the Bees second fastest combination of goals.

It was the third time this season the Bees came back from trailing the Rayz after the second period of play, but this time the Bees didn't have to worry about having the game decided in the shootout, as they did the previous two attempts (lost both). The win marked the first time this season the Bees have won when trailing after the second period of play (1-14-4) and the Bees also improve their record to 13-1-0 when scoring first.

The Bees out-shot the Rayz 35-20 in the contest and Bees goaltender Jeff Levy earned his second consecutive win, stopping 19 shots. In Austin, the Ice Bats fell to the Laredo Bucks 4-1, so the Bees move back into second place by one-standing point. The two teams face off in a very important match-up Saturday night at the Dodge Arena.
