Alexandria Beetles News Release

Waterloo, IA - Behind six brilliant innings from Jon Reed in his first start of the summer, the Alexandria Beetles (6-10) upended the Waterloo Bucks (12-5) in the second of five between the two sides.

Reed scattered just three hits and three walks while striking out six and has allowed just one run in 16 innings of work this season for a .56 ERA.

Waterloo starter Kyle Kramp matched Reed pitch for pitch through the first two before a Buck error opened the door for Alexandria in the third. Josh Carpenter reached on a booted ground ball and with two outs and Carpenter at second, Jimmy Pickens roped a single into right to give the Beetles a 1-0 lead.

Alexandria added to the advantage in the fourth plating three runs. After a leadoff strikeout, five consecutive Beetles reached beginning with a walk to Ryan Padilla, single by Josh Guerra, and walk to Jared Musgrove to load the bases. Dylan Raper followed with a free pass of his own to force in a run and the next batter Will Fulmer pulled a two-RBI double to left to make the score 4-0.

The seventh proved another three-run inning for Alexandria. Ben Moore walked and Pickens singled him to second to bring up David Garcia, who hit a ground ball to first that was kicked away allowing one run to score. With two outs, Guerra singled home Pickens and Garcia as the Beetles took a convincing 7-0 lead.

The Bucks would not go away quietly at home, teeing off on reliever Scott Sanderson in the seventh. Sanderson walked and hit the first two batters he faced before allowing a pair of infield singles to end the shutout bid. After a fielder's choice ground ball for the first out of the inning, Benny Roberts hit a grand slam to right to cut the deficit to just two.

But Alex Guilford shut down Waterloo in the eighth and Anthony Bazzani earned his second save with a dominating ninth as the Beetles evened the series at a game each.

Alexandria has now won three of four and four of six.

Game three comes Saturday night at 6:35 CDT.
