Alexandria Beetles News Release
St. Cloud, MN - The Alexandria bats broke out in a big way, scoring nine runs against St. Cloud, but it was not enough as the Rox (5-5) scored runs in each of the first five innings, including six in the bottom of the third, to send the Beetles (2-8) to their seventh straight loss 12-9.
Jimmy Pickens followed up his three-stolen-base debut on Thursday with a mammoth homerun to dead centerfield that traveled over 400 feet on a roped line drive in his second appearance.
Shawn Riesgraf took the loss for Alexandria, departing in the third inning after giving up nine runs, seven earned.
Ben Meyer was victorious for the Rox, going five and settling down after a rough first inning.
A pair of walks and singles, combined with a pair of throwing errors by St. Cloud catcher Travis Enger, allowed the Beetles to take a 4-0 lead before the Rox had come to the plate.
But the Rox pulled two back on a bizarre sequence in the bottom of the first when a pitch hit Beetle catcher Jared Musgrove in the mask and bounced away allowing two runs to score.
St. Cloud chipped another from the deficit after a leadoff double in the second and took the lead in the bottom of the third as after a leadoff comebacker to Riesgraf, the next five Rox reached on three walks and two singles. With two outs and the bases loaded, Riesgraf worked a full count on nine hitter Phil Immholte who lined a bases clearing double to make the score 8-4.
Immholte has eight RBI in three games against the Beetles this year.
After St. Cloud tacked on another run in the fourth following a leadoff triple by Boo Vasquez, Tanner Vavra hit a one out single in the top of the fifth to bring up Pickens, who smoked the first pitch he saw from Meyer to cut the deficit to four.
But Alexandria gave those runs right back in the bottom of the fifth on two singles and three more walks to make the score 12-6.
The Beetles halved the deficit in the eighth with four singles in the by Ben Moore, Johnny Tolson, pinch-hitter David Garcia, and Josh Carpenter, but 12-9 was as close as the visitors could get.
The two teams complete their four game set on Saturday at 6:05 CDT before a Sunday off-day.
