South Bend Cubs News Release

Midland, MI - Bradlee Beesley has had a sizzling hot last week-and-a-half for the South Bend Cubs. Now up to 10 straight games with a hit, Beesley had the game winning knock Saturday afternoon as South Bend took down the Great Lakes Loons by a final of 4-2. The win gives South Bend the series lead in Midland, and a chance at a series win tomorrow afternoon.

Saturday's victory marks the first time this season that South Bend has won a game while being outhit by the opponent, and also it was a comeback victory. Connor Noland got the start for the Cubs and sent the first five down in order that he faced.

It was the Loons on the board first though, as Griffin Lockwood-Powell brought in Chris Alleyne on an RBI sacrifice-fly. The damage was limited, with Lockwood-Powell's sac-fly being caught at the warning track by Jacob Wetzel. The drive nearly left the yard. Noland also stranded another run 90-feet away at third base to keep it 1-0 Loons at the time.

The Cubs quickly answered back in the top of the 5th versus Great Lakes starter Yon Castro. The right-hander Castro returned to the mound in the 5th needing one more inning to be in line for the win. Instead, he left on the hook for the loss thanks to RBI base hits from Juan Mora and Beesley. The Beesley two-run single heightened his hitting streak to double digits, and was the eventual game winning knock.

Out of the bullpen, Didier Vargas earned the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Then Sam Thoresen added three strong innings out of the pen to lead South Bend to the 9th.

In the 9th, Kevin Alcántara walked, stole both second and third base, and came home on an error made by center fielder Jake Vogel.

Adam Laskey recorded the final three outs for the Cubs, and Great Lakes picked up their fifth hit of the game against Laskey on a solo home run from Dalton Rushing. The home run gave Great Lakes the base hit advantage in the game, but Laskey had a pair of strikeouts in the 9th to finish things.

South Bend's record now stands at 9-5, and they will try for their second series win of the year Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Dow Diamond is set for 1:05 PM, with right-hander Kohl Franklin on the mound. Franklin also pitched on Tuesday, where he fired 3.2 shutout innings.
