Bees to Become 'Las Abejas' for MiLB Copa de la Diversion

March 20, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release

The Salt Lake Bees will take the field as 'Las Abejas de Salt Lake' (pronounced ah-VAY-haas) for four games this season as part of Minor League Baseball's Hispanic/Latino outreach program. Las Abejas (the Spanish translation of 'Bees') will debut on Friday, May 4 against the Las Vegas 51s. Additional Abejas games will be May 5, June 10 and June 11.

Las Abejas are one of 33 Minor League teams from across the country to participate in "Copa de la Diversion," or "Fun Cup," a season-long event series designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams' local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities. Last year the Bees had 19 players from Spanish-speaking locales including 10 from Venezuela, five from Dominican Republic, two from Mexico and one each from Panama and Puerto Rico.

Along with wearing special uniforms for four games during the season, Las Abejas games will also be broadcast in Spanish on Juan 1600 AM. Nelson Moran will serve as the Spanish language play-by-play announcer. Additional details of promotions and events at the ballpark during Abejas games will be announced later.

The Bees open up the 2018 regular season at home on Thursday, April 5 against the Albuquerque Isotopes. The 70-game regular season schedule wraps up on Sept. 3. A full schedule including game times and promotions is available at www.slbees.com.
