(New Britain, CT.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (25-33) dropped the second game against the New Britain Bees (30-29) 7-2.
The Bees got on the board first in the game, putting up a pair of runs in the second. Jason Rogers started the inning with a double, immediately scoring on a single from Brock Stassi. After Paul Clemens (1-4) struck out the next batter, James Skelton singled to move Stassi to scoring position. Jonathon Galvez followed with another single, scoring Stassi to grab an early 2-0 lead.
The Blue Crabs offense responded immediately, putting up two of their own. A walk and a single started the inning, with a fielder's choice putting runners on the corners with one out. A single from Frank Martinez scored Francisco Rosario to put the Blue Crabs on the board. Angelo Songco added a second straight single, scoring Edwin Garcia to tie the game
The tie didn't hold long, as the Bees retook the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. A walk, followed by back-to-back singles loaded the bases with one out in the inning. A sacrifice fly from Skelton scored Rogers, and an error on the same play allowed Stassi to score as well. An error at third base brought Matt Tuiasosopo across, putting New Britain up 5-2.
After a scoreless fourth, the Bees added two more to their tally in the fifth. Three straight singles started the inning, with Tuiasosopo driving in Rogers with the final of them. After a walk loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly from Ozney Guillen brought Stassi across, extending the Bees lead out to five runs.
Zach Stewart (6-3) was strong after the rough third, shutting down the Blue Crabs offense over the rest of his night. The right-hander gave up just three hits after the third inning, turning his five-run lead over to the bullpen after 6.2 innings of work. Sam Gervacio was the first reliever out of the pen for New Britain, picking up a strikeout to finish the seventh and working a 1-2-3 eighth inning.
Mike Hepple came on to pitch for the Bees in the ninth, looking to even the series at one game each. Hepple capped off the strong night for the Bees pitching staff with a clean ninth inning, finishing off the 7-2 win for New Britain.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, July 1st for the final game in the series against the Bees. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 P.M. on Sunday at New Britain Stadium.
