Long Island Ducks News Release
Central Islip, N.Y., June 1, 2004â From start to finish, Ducks lefty Matt Beech was dominant tonight, lifting the Ducks to a 13-1 win over the Pennsylvania Road Warriors at Citibank Park. The victory improves Long Island's league-best record to 17-7 and gives the club a 4 ½ game lead over Nashua in the Atlantic League's North Division.
Beech allowed one earned run on two hits while tossing a complete game and tying the Ducks record of 13 strikeouts in a single game. Through the first six innings, Beech had allowed just an infield single until Rob Cafiero homered to left in the seventh. The homer and infield single were the only two hits he allowed all evening. The only other batter to reach base was Edgar Tovar, who walked in the first inning.
Offensively for the Ducks, Jason Johnson enjoyed a career evening, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, single and four RBI. Johnson also scored three runs. Kimera Bartee, Wendell Magee and Doug Jennings also went deep, with Jennings' shot being of the tape-measure variety, landing well over the All-Island Mason sign in left center, the deepest part of the park. All nine Ducks in the lineup recorded a hit, while five players had multiple hits and four recorded multiple RBI.
The Ducks go for the series win on Wednesday evening, as the two teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. at Citibank Park. Lefty Bill Pulsipher (3-0) gets the start for Long Island and will be opposed by Pennsylvania right-hander Pat Collins (1-1).
