Surf Drown Patriots 7-2

Bridgewater, NJ - The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-2 at Commerce Bank Ballpark in the first game of a double-header on Tuesday night.

The Surf jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Second baseman Demetrius Heath drew a walk and stole second base. Shortstop Orlando Miller drew a walk and Heath came around to score on first baseman Dario Delgado's single. Miller scored on a double play later in the inning.

Atlantic City added to the lead with a run in the top of the second inning. Center fielder Gary Johnson singled and stole second base. Right fielder Jason Law followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0.

Somerset answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Center fielder Chris Wakeland singled and advanced to second on a single by third baseman Jeff Nettles. Left fielder Norm Hutchins followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-1.

The Patriots put up another run in the bottom of the third inning. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich singled and moved to third base on a double by Wakeland. Nettles followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Surf extended the lead with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Heath led off with a walk, went to second on Miller's sacrifice bunt, and scored on left fielder Ozzie Timmons' single. Timmons advanced to second base on designated hitter Ryan Minor's single and scored on third baseman Raul Marval's base hit. Minor crossed home on a wild pitch from Patriots reliever Paul Darnell, and Marval scored on Johnson's single.

Surf starter Kyle Goldwater (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven in a complete game. Patriots starter Blake Williams (1-3) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

The 2004 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm against the Atlantic City Surf. Wednesday's game includes Somerset Medical Center Health Fair Night.
