Portland Beavers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - Rett Johnson threw a complete game four-hit shutout to lead the Tacoma Rainiers to a 4-0 win Friday night over the Portland Beavers.

Johnson baffled the Beavers' hitters, striking out seven and walking one. The right-hander, who was making just his fifth Triple-A start, has given up two earned runs in 33.2 innings since joining the Rainiers.

Mike Bynum was nearly as impressive for Portland, allowing just one run in 5.2 innings, but ended up taking the loss. The left-hander gave up six hits, walked two and fanned four.

Tacoma took an early 1-0 lead with a two-out first-inning rally. After J.R. Phillips was hit by a pitch and Pat Borders singled, Kenny Kelly hit an RBI double to left field.

The Rainiers scored three more times in the eighth against Portland reliever Matt Hampton. With runners on second and third, Andy Barkett hit a three-run home run to right field.

Luis Figueroa led the Rainiers with two hits on the night.

NOTES: Bynum, who hasn't won since June 3, has lost four-straight decisions ... Johnson also defeated the Beavers on July 1 when he threw six scoreless innings.
