Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Chad Huffman clubbed his fifth home run and drove in four runs and Peter Ciofrone was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs as the Portland Beavers defeated the Salt Lake Bees 13-4 before 5,379 Monday afternoon at PGE Park.
Kyle Blanks and Eliezer Alfonzo also homered for the Beavers, who racked up a season-high 14 hits to go along with their highest run total of the season.
All nine Portland starters had a least one hit, including Emil Brown, who drew two walks and stroked a three-run double in the sixth inning as the Beavers (16-16) pulled away.
The win gave the Beavers their first series victory since a four-game sweep over Fresno, April 17-20.
Alfonzo's solo blast broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth before Brown made it 8-4 with his bases-loaded double. In the eighth, Blanks added a two-run shot - his eighth of the season - and Huffman belted a three-run homer for good measure.
Jon Ellis (4-0) struck out four and did not allow a hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get his fourth win of the season. Fernando Rodriguez (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs in the sixth.
Ciofrone's two-run single scored Kevin Howard and Will Venable as the Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first.
Salt Lake, however, put together a four-run rally in the third, getting an RBI single from Gary Patchett and a two-run double from Freddy Sandoval, who later scored.
The Beavers were able to tie the game in the fourth. Ciofrone tripled and scored on an RBI single by Huffman to get the Beavers to within a run, and Brett Dowdy's single through the left side was enough to plate Huffman from second with two outs.
With their second homestand behind them, the Beavers take to the road Tuesday, opening a four-game series at Oklahoma City. First pitch is 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Before the game, the Beavers announced that outfielder Drew Macias was recalled by San Diego and left-handed pitcher Arturo Lopez was optioned to Portland ... the Beavers wore their all-blue retro uniforms for the first time at home ... reliever Chris Britton made his Beavers debut. Britton was transferred from Class AA San Antonio on Saturday ... the 13 runs scored were the most for Portland since a 17-run output at Salt Lake on May 23, 2008.
