Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Justin Germano pocketed his 22nd career victory with the Beavers and Portland won its third straight one-run game by defeating the Tucson Sidewinders 3-2 Thursday night before 10,511, the largest crowd of the season at PGE Park.

Nick Hundley and Matt Antonelli both extended their hitting streaks to seven games and drove in a run each for the Beavers (37-35), who have won five of their last seven games.

The Beavers, now 13-8 in one-run affairs, scored in each of the first three innings, getting RBI singles from Hundley, Antonelli and Vincent Sinisi, and building up a large enough margin to overcome solo homers by Trent Oeltjen and Robby Hammock.

Germano (2-2) struck out five and allowed two runs, six hits and four walks over his 6 2/3 innings for the win. Germano, who has played in parts of four seasons with Portland, now trails Tim Stauffer by two for tops in career victories since the Beavers returned to the PCL in 2001.

Hammock's blast off blast off Germano cut the Tucson deficit to 3-2 in the sixth, but Joe Thatcher shut down the Sidewinders in the seventh and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, and Edwin Moreno worked the ninth for his fifth save.

Portland loaded the bases in the first but was forced to settle for one run, as Hundley's two-out single through the right side plated Antonelli for the early advantage. Antonelli made it 2-0 an inning later, following Germano's two-out double and a subsequent wild pitch with an RBI single to center.

In the third, Oeltjen belted a solo home run over the wall in deep right, but Brian Myrow doubled and scored on Sinisi's bloop single into shallow right to restore the two-run lead.

Tucson starter Billy Buckner (4-6) took the loss despite a quality start. The right-hander gave up three runs, eight hits and three walks in six innings of work for the Sidewinders, who have lost four of six.

The Beavers conclude their brief homestand Friday night against the Sidewinders. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Myrow, who ranks among the league leaders in several hitting categories, has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 and 16 of his last 18 games ... Will Venable singled in the eighth and has hits in 14 of his last 15 games ... it was Germano's 48th start for the Beavers, which ranks tied for third on the club's eight-year career list.
