Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Beavers today placed shortstop Jose Nieves on the disabled list (retroactive to April 20) and announced that shortstop J.J. Furmaniak has been transferred to Portland from Class AA Mobile.
Nieves has been bothered by a tight oblique muscle and missed all four games of the Beavers' recent four-game series with Tucson.
In nine games, Nieves is batting .222 (8-for-36) with four RBIs.
The Beavers currently have five players on the disabled list and have lost 34 man-games to injury so far this season.
Furmaniak, 24, batted .196 (10-for-51) with a home run and eight RBIs in 14 games with Mobile to start the season.
Furmaniak, who has yet to play above Class AA, began his professional career with the San Diego Padres organization in 2000 as a 22nd-round draft pick of the club in that season's draft. The shortstop split the 2003 campaign between Class A Lake Elsinore and Mobile in the Padres system, batting a combined .301 with 12 homers and 65 RBIs between the two stops.
