Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Jason Bulger struck out five over the final three innings, and the Salt Lake Bees plated the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 4-2 win over the Portland Beavers before 4,175 at PGE Park Saturday night.

Portland (8-8) wasted several opportunities to get back into the game, stranding 13 base runners despite out-hitting the Bees 8-6 and drawing eight walks against five different Salt Lake pitchers.

Down 2-0, the Beavers tied the game in the third inning when Luke Carlin hit a leadoff solo home run, his first Triple-A blast, and Jon Knott later drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Bees (10-6) retook the lead in the fifth when a groundout scored Adam Pavkovich, who led off the inning with a walk. Dallas McPherson's RBI double increased the advantage to 4-2.

Jonathon Rouwenhorst got the win in relief for the Bees. Bulger danced around trouble to get his first save of the year.

Tim Stauffer gave up four runs on four hits and three walks for the Beavers, who have lost their last three home games.

Stauffer (1-1) retired the first two batters in the first inning but then proceeded to walk Nick Gorneault and McPherson. Mike Napoli followed with an RBI double that escaped the grasp of third baseman Paul McAnulty, who was making his first appearance at the position in his five-year career.

Pavkovich hit a two-out solo home run off Stauffer in the second inning to give the Bees a 2-0 lead.

Terrmel Sledge, optioned to Portland from San Diego earlier in the week, was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in his first game with the club. Carlin was 2-for-3 with a walk in his best game at Triple-A.

The Beavers play host to the Bees again Sunday at PGE Park. First pitch is 2:05 p.m.

NOTES: Salt Lake starter Kasey Olenberger was struck in the hand on a liner back up the box by Sledge in the first inning and left the game after retiring just two batters ... the Beavers grounded into three double plays ... the Beavers co-tenants at PGE Park, professional soccer's Portland Timbers, lost 1-0 at Vancouver in their season opener Saturday night ...
