Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Graham Koonce went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run to lead the Sacramento River Cats to a 3-2 win Tuesday night over the Portland Beavers in front of 5,717 at PGE Park

The loss, which ended Portland's three-game winning streak, put the Beavers two games behind Edmonton in the Pacific Coast League's North Division. Portland (55-56) hasn't won four in a row since June 2-6 when it took two from Las Vegas and two from Tucson.

Aaron Harang (8-2) allowed two runs in six innings to record the win. He gave up five hits, walked two and fanned three.

Portland starter Dennis Tankersley took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits. The right-hander walked two and struck out five.

The Beavers had only five hits but squandered two chances to tie the game. Portland left nine men on base, including three in the fourth inning and two in the seventh.

The River Cats (68-43) took an early lead, scoring three runs in the third inning. After Chris Prieto tripled and scored on a passed ball, Graham Koonce hit an opposite-field two-run homer over the left field wall.

The Beavers picked up a run in the bottom of the frame when Yamid Haad hit a home run, his fourth of the season.

Portland loaded the bases in the fourth with no one out, but scored only one run. Keith Lockhart, who joined the Beavers Tuesday for a major league rehabilitation stint, recorded his first RBI when he was hit by a pitch.

In the seventh, the Beavers once again squandered a good scoring opportunity. With runners on second and third and no one out, Tagg Bozied, Rich Gomez and Xavier Nady each were not able to drive in the tying run.

NOTES: Hall-of-Famer Jim Palmer will sign autographs at PGE Park before Wednesday's game ... The Beavers announced Tuesday that Portland manager Rick Sweet will shave his mustache if his team regains sole possession of first place in the North Division.
