Portland Beavers News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Luke Carlin, Craig Stansberry and Will Venable each blasted a home run and Brett Dowdy drove in a pair of runs as part of a nine-run 11th inning rally to earn a 10-1 extra-innings win over the Nashville Sounds at Herschel Greer Stadium on Sunday.
Tied at 1-1, the Beavers (56-50) sent 13 hitters to the plate in the top of the 11th inning to break the deadlock. Started with a lead-off walk by Peter Ciofrone, the Beavers' rally included five consecutive hits, including back-to-back home runs by Carlin and Stansberry, to allow Ciofrone to come to the plate a for second time in the frame and extend his hitting streak to 24 games.
The late rally also featured Edwin Moreno's first-career hit, a three-run shot by Carlin, a two-RBI hit by Dowdy and a two-run homer by Venable to help Portland improve to 10-2 in extra-inning games this season.
Portland logged four home runs against Nashville (42-66), including Vincent Sinisi's third clout of the season in the second inning to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Moreno (5-2) faced the minimum over the final two innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. Combined, Portland pitchers gave up just five hits and one run and struck out eight hitters.
Beavers starter Cesar Ramos struck out seven and allowed only three hits in 6 2/3 shut out innings of work in a no-decision. Ramos has not allowed a run in his last 16 innings.
Joe Dillon collected two walks and Tony Gwynn Jr. recorded two hits and scored the only run for Nashville.
Luis Pena (1-2) suffered his second loss on the year yielding six runs on five hits and allowed a walk in 2/3 inning.
Nashville starter Mark DiFelice turned in a sharp outing, allowing one run on two hits and struck out seven over eight innings.
An infield single by Gwynn and base hit to right field by Jay Gibbons off Portland's Joe Thatcher helped Nashville manufacture the tying run in the eighth inning. With only one out, Dillon grounded into a force out that allowed Gwynn to score from third base.
Portland and Nashville square off for the third game of a four-game set on Monday at 5 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Sunday's game marks the fourth time this season the Beavers have recorded four or more home runs in a single game and the first time since May 6, that Portland hitters have belted three home runs in one inning.
