Ninth Inning Rally Lifts Omaha over Tucson 5-4

Tucson, AZ - A pair of back-to-back RBI doubles by Brayan Pena and Jason Smith in the ninth inning secured the 5-4 win for Omaha after a back and forth match up on Sunday night.

Max Scherzer started the game and went two innings giving up one run off two hits and walked three, while striking out two.

Both teams got on the scoreboard early by scoring a run in the first inning. Omaha put up their one run on a ground out to first that scored Gookie Dawkins from third. Tucson came back and led off the inning with a triple by Jeff Salazar who was later brought in by a sacrifice fly by Trent Oeltjen.

The Sidewinders took the lead in the third inning when Josh Whitesell hit a 2-out line drive single to center field allowing Matt Morgan to score from third.

In the top of the sixth inning Tucson's Matt Torra walked Mike Stodolka with two outs and next batter, Damon Hollins, drove him in with a double to center to tie the game back up 2-2.

The Royals took their second lead of the game with a solo shot by Chris Lubanski to center field to lead off the seventh inning. But in the seventh the Sidewinders quickly regained the lead off a Salazar RBI double and Tim Raines, Jr. RBI single to make it a 4-3 game.

Tucson's Reid Mahon blew his first save of the season after going 21-for-21 between two levels before his appearance on Sunday.

The Sidewinders will face the Omaha Royals in the third game of a four game series at 7:00 PM. LHP Evan MacLane (5-6, 4.86) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Brandon Duckworth (3-11, 5.04) will start for the Royals. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50 p.m.
