Beast Win 2-1 over the Growlers
February 6, 2019 - ECHL (ECHL)
Newfoundland Growlers News Release
The Newfoundland Growlers dropped a controversial 2-1 decision Wednesday night at Mile One Centre against the Brampton Beast to split the mid-week series.
A scoreless opening period of play saw good chances at both ends of the ice, including a powerplay for both teams, but it was a battle of the goaltenders as Michael Garteig kicked aside 8 shots in the Growlers crease, and Jake Paterson made 11 stops for the Beast.
David Vallorani opened the scoring just 56 seconds into the second period giving the Beast a 1-0 lead. The goal marked the first for Brampton in over two games after coming off back-to-back shutout losses.
Brandon Marino added a controversial goal at 17:55 of the second period, which needed confirmation from the goal judge at the conclusion of the second period extending the Beast lead to 2-0. The final 2:05 remaining in the second period after the goal was scored was re-played prior the start of the third period.
Scott Pooley provided the Growlers their best scoring chance of the second period near the mid-way mark, but was robbed by Paterson blocker-side on his breakaway attempt.
Matt Bradley finally put the Growlers on the board during some four-on-four hockey at 8:29 of the third period cleaning up a mess in the crease for his 11th of the season, but it would stand as the only Growlers tally.
Head Coach John Snowden pulled Michael Garteig with just under two minutes remaining for an extra attacker, but Jake Paterson stood tall between the pipes for the Beast to lock down a 2-1 win for the road team.
