Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 27, 2003) – The Long Island Ducks lost 8-3 to the Newark Bears before a crowd of 6,261 at Citibank Park tonight. With ten games remaining in the first half of the season, Long Island's record now stands at 25-28.

After a scoreless, hitless first three innings of play, both teams opened the scoring with single runs in the fourth inning. At the end of six, the Bears held a slim 4-3 margin and expanded their lead to 5-3 when an Elvis Pena error allowed Eddie Lara to score in the seventh. Newark's three ninth-inning runs ended any realistic hope of a Ducks comeback.

Ducks starter Denny Harriger (2-7) was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs in six and one thirds innings. Reliever Oscar Henriquez allowed three earned runs without recording an out in the ninth inning. Offensively for Long Island, second baseman Rusty McNamara went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Saturday night, the Ducks play the rubber match with Newark. Game time is 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at 6:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by WLIE (540-AM) with Chris King and David Weiss describing the action from Central Islip.
