(Bridgeport, Conn., June 27, 2003) â The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Pennsylvania Road Warriors 8-1, on Friday evening before 3,505 fans at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Starting pitcher Tim Cain got his first win in more than a year, allowing only 1 run over 5.0 innings.
Atlantic League RBI leader Oreste Marraro got the Bluefish on the board in the bottom of the first with a ground-out to first base that scored Tony Rodriguez from third. Willis Otanez followed with a single back up the box to bring Jose Amado home that put the Bluefish up 2-0. The Bluefish continued their scoring ways when Avila started off the bottom of the third inning with a triple down the left field line. Avila scored on a sac fly by Amado to make the score 3-0. Amado, on a RBI tear lately, had his 12th in the last 4 games.
Pennsylvania's Gary Johnson slapped a one-out single towards right field and advanced to third on Omar Rosario's ground rule double. Cain continued his dominant pitching by getting Dario Delgado to fly out to left to end the top of the fourth.
Bluefish catcher Hector Kuilan jacked a home run over the right field wall. Kuilan's third of the year put the âfish up 4-0 heading into the fifth inning.
With one out in the top of the fifth, Road Warrior center fielder Hutchins bunted up the first base line and beat out the relay throw. Hutchins then proceeded to steal second and score on a double by Gustavo Escobar to make the score 4-1.
Amado continued his hot hitting with a two out double in the bottom of the fifth inning off Road Warrior reliever Michael Perkins. Perkins gave up a single to Marraro to bring home Amado to give Bridgeport a 5-1 edge.
After back-to-back singles by Kuilan and Richard Almanzar, Avila hit a low liner that found its way to the wall and ended up at third with a stand up triple, his second of the game, scoring Kuilan and Almanzar. Tony Rodriguez hit a single to left to bring in Avila to give Bridgeport an 8-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
On Saturday the Bridgeport Bluefish continue their three game series against the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. LHP Terry Rosenkranz (1-0, 4.60) will take the mound for the Bluefish opposing Pennsylvania's RHP Greg Runser (1-2, 5.38).
