Bears swept by Hawks in three extra-inning games
The Yakima Bears lost 3-2 to the Boise Hawks in 12 innings Wednesday night. The Hawks won all three games in extra innings in the series, as the Bears suffered a series sweep for the first time in 2011.
Both starting pitchers had quality starts in the low-scoring game. Randy Hamrick allowed only one unearned run in six innings for the Bears, while Luis Liria yielded only one run in his six innings for the Hawks.
The Bears scored off of Liria in the third on a sacrifice fly. It was the only run managed by the Bears after loading the bases with no outs. Two errors by the Bears defense in the fifth inning allowed the Hawks to tie the game.
After Boise moved in front 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh while facing reliever Justin Albert, Jae Yun Kim led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to tie the game.
The final score came in the twelfth, off of reliever Mike Blake. A walk, sacrifice bunt, and a bloop single combined to score the winning run, as the loss for Blake drops his record to 1-3 this season.
The other two relievers for the Bears combined for four shutout innings. Marshall tossed a 1-2-3 eighth and then Kable Hogben kept the Hawks off the board for three innings.
Kim had two of the Bears seven hits in the loss, including his second home run of the season. Jimmy Comerota had the Bears other extra-base hit, with a triple in the ninth inning. Comerota would be tagged out in that ninth inning as part of a controversial double play that earned Bears manager Audo Vicente his first ejection of the season after an argument with the umpire.
The Bears are now 6-14 this season and continue the road trip with five games against the Eugene Emeralds. The Emeralds had a league-record 14-game winning streak entering Wednesday's play. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at PK Park. Right-handed pitchers Brad Wilson for the Bears and John Barbato for the Emeralds are expected to start.
