August 4, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
It took a season-high three hours and 41 minutes, but Newark held off a late Jackals' rally to hold on to a 9-7 victory.
On a humid, muggy night at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Bears went to work early against Jackals' lefty Craig Clark, who drops to 5-6 on the year. Clark allowed three runs through two, but four in the sixth inning.
The Bears would erupt for five runs in the sixth inning off seven straight singles, chasing Clark from the ballgame. He allowed six runs on nine hits in five-and-a-third innings. Clark struck out three.
In only his third start of the season, Newark's Greg Lane was effective. The righty went six innings, allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits. He issued just two walks and struck out two. Lane is now 3-0 this season.
The Jackals did not go down without a fight. Down 8-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the hometown team scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings. They would add four more in the eighth via Chris Henderson's bases-clearing triple and Angel Berroa's RBI double. The Jackals would strand the bases loaded that inning.
Henderson ended the day 2-5 with three RBIs. Berroa was 3-5 with two RBIs.
Jorge Vasquez struck out the side in the ninth to to earn his Can-Am League leading 13th save of the season.
For Newark, first baseman Patrick Reardon led the way, going 3-4 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored. Former Jackals infielder Mike Richard and Quentin Davis also had big days - Richard was 2-4 with an RBI; Davis was 3-5 with a triple and two RBIs.
New Jersey scored an unearned run in the second inning on an error by second baseman Tucker Nathans. They'd add a run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Nick Giarraputo went 1-4 on the day with an RBI and a walk while Angel Berroa chipped in with a 3-5 day and an RBI.
With the loss, the Jackals drop to 43-30, while the Bears improve to 23-51. With Quebec's walk-off win earlier Saturday, the Jackals drop back to four games out of first place.
Rockland won a thrilling 1-0 game against the Kansas City T-Bones to improve to four games back of the final playoff spot the Jackals currently hold
Tomorrow, the two teams finish up this edition of their Essex County rivalry. Righty Steve Fox (9-1, 2.82) goes for New Jersey in search of his Can-Am-leading tenth win of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. with the pregame beginning ten minutes prior.
