Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears' energy was high as they met the 2009-2010 SPHL Champions Huntsville Havoc for the first time this season. Huntsville came to Knoxville with a 7-1 record and left with their second straight loss after Knoxville triumphed with a final score of 4-3.
Emery Olauson had two goals and an assist while goalie Bryan Hince came up big with 25 saves to break Knoxville's losing streak. Frank Furdero and Mike Bulawka also scored to lift the Ice Bears to a victory in front of a crowd of 2,507 at the Civic Coliseum.
Huntsville scored early in the first period off their second shot on goal as Brett Needham knocked a pass from Kamil Vavra past Hince for the first goal of the game.
Olauson answered later in the period, launching the puck over Havoc goalie Mark Sibbald to tie the game. Olauson scored his power play goal with help from Furdero and Mark Van Vliet. The first period ended tied at 1.
Once again, Huntsville came out strong, scoring their second goal of the game just 3 minutes into the second. Knoxville captain Bulawka tied the game at 2 off a pass from Furdero and Martin Kubaliak. Less than one minute later, in an impressive unassisted play, Olauson scored his second goal of the night bringing the Ice Bears to a 3-2 lead.
With 1:39 left in the second period, the Ice Bears were awarded a penalty shot due to an interference call on Huntsville. Sibbald stopped the shot by Furdero and the period ended with the Ice Bears in the lead.
Play was intense at the start of the third period. With Sibbald lying in a crowded net, Knoxville's Furdero scored off a pass from Lorne Misita and Olauson, boosting the Ice Bears to a 4-2 lead over the SPHL points leader.
Strong Ice Bears defense kept the Huntsville Havoc away from the goal for the majority of the final period. With less than 40 seconds left in the game, former Ice Bear Mike Carter scored the final point, but it wasn't enough to secure a win. The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated Huntsville, 4-3.
Knoxville's two newest roster additions had impressive showing in tonight's game. Rob Campbell had 7shots on goal while Tyler Fletcher, who is on a 3-game tryout, had 3 shots on goal and was a physical presence on the ice.
The Ice Bears will host the Pensacola Ice Flyers in two games next weekend. Friday is Girl Scout Food Drive Night and Saturday is Hometown Heroes Night followed by the first jersey auction of the season.
