Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks were not unable to overcome a strong goaltending performance from the Pensacola Ice Flyers 'goaltender Ryan Scott, nor a four point night from forward Matt Whitehead, as the Ice Flyers bettered the RiverHawks 6-2 Saturday night.
The RiverHawks were coming off of a huge victory over the previously undefeated Huntsville Havoc, but were clearly rusty after a long bus ride to Pensacola, FL, getting behind in the game early.
Pensacola scored two goals in the first period to set the tone for the night. First, Chris Wilson scored his sixth goal of the season for the Ice Flyers, getting his club out to an early 1-0 lead just over eight minutes into the game. Later in the period Kyle Crawford was able to beat RiverHawks goaltender Jon Olthuis with less than two minutes remaining in the first frame to make it a two-goal game.
The Ice Flyers were able to extend their lead in the second period, scoring the only goal of the stanza. Whitehead and Brett Liscomb set up Tanner Schultz for a power play goal extremely late in the second frame to make it a three-goal game.
In the third period Liscomb and Whitehead were both able to score goals to make it a dominate five-goal lead before the RiverHawks could respond. Forward Egor Mironov finally got the RiverHawks on the board when he was able to capitalize on assists from defenseman Luke Lucyk and forward Matt Auffrey to narrow the gap slightly.
The two teams exchanged goals later in the period to make the final score 6-2. Scott came away with the win for the Ice Flyers stopping 31 of 33 shots on goal. The win allows Pensacola to move into a tie for second place in the Southern Professional Hockey League standings, while the RiverHawks sit in fourth place.
