Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA -After a big come from behind 7-4 win on Saturday night, the IceGators returned to action against the same Fayetteville FireAntz. However, tonight was much different. The 'Gators fell to the FireAntz 7-2.
The FireAntz came out on shooting. Fayetteville out shot the IceGators 17-5 in the opening period. They had the first eight shots on goal and did not allow the IceGators a shot on goal until the 14:00 minute mark. Bobby Reed put the FireAntz on the board first, a little more than two minutes into the game. Chris Leveille, the FireAntz second leading scorer, then got in on the action scoring with 14:45 left in the period. Fayetteville's leading scorer, Robert Sich, scored three minutes later. Scott Darling (LOU) allowed the fourth goal of the period when Ryan Salvis scored an unassisted goal with 4:28 remaining. Then Nick Vandenbeld (LOU) scored his second goal of the season, to cut into the 4-0 lead, with 3:40 left in the first period.
Coming into the second period the IceGators found themselves in a 4-1 hole. The period began a little slower than the first period did. The 'Gators had the first shot on goal in the period less than two minutes into the second period but Fayetteville was able to strike first when Sich scored his second goal of the night and tenth of the season. With 6:39 remaining in the period, Sich scored his third goal of the night six minutes later, putting the FireAntz up 6-1.
Last night the 'Gators scored four goals in the third period to come from behind to win but that would not be the case tonight. The 'Gators opened the third period with a goal by Donald Melnyk, Nick Vandenbeld and Trevor Karasiewicz assisted on the goal. The FireAntz added their seventh goal of the night when Ryan Salvis scored with 15:15 remaining in the game.
"We got out played tonight,"Â answered a frustrated IceGator Head Coach Dave MacIsaac. "We started the game sluggish and didn't help our goalie out. We didn't clear the puck and that gave them a lot of rebound shots. We have to clean it up and return to the ice hard this week before next weekend's games.-Â
Louisiana hits the road next weekend for two games, both against the Fayetteville FireAntz. The first game will be on Friday, November 19 at 7:35 and the second game will also be at 7:35 on Saturday, November 20.
The 'Gators return home for a three game home stand over the Thanksgiving Holiday. The 'Gators will take on their rivals Mississippi, on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:05, and Pensacola, on Thanksgiving Day at 7:05. Then the defending Southern Professional Hockey League champions, the Huntsville Havoc, visit the Dome on Friday, November 26. Don't miss a moment of the action. Call (337) 704-4423.
