Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club opened the 2012 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals with a pair of losses on the road at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this weekend. In Game One on Friday, Mike Carman scored the lone BEARS tally with 1:52 remaining in regulation, but Colin McDonald scored twice to pace the Penguins offense and give the hosts a 3-1 victory. Brad Thiessen stopped 19 shots in the contest. The BEARS scored twice on Saturday with just 16 shots on goal, but the Penguins erupted for a four-goal first period en route to a 7-2 win. McDonald netted two goals for the second night in a row. Patrick McNeill, after setting up Carman's Game One goal, scored the BEARS' first strike on Saturday, while Garrett Mitchell netted his first career postseason goal when he deflected Julien Brouillette's point shot past Thiessen. The series now shifts to GIANT Center for Game Three on Wednesday at 7:00PM. The Penguins lead the best-of-five opening round series two games to none, forcing the BEARS to win on Wednesday to stay alive in the postseason. Games Four and Five, if necessary, will be played respectively on Friday in HERSHEY and on Saturday in Wilkes-Barre Township.
Offense from the D:
Four out of the top six leaders in HERSHEY's playoff scoring are defensemen. Patrick McNeill shows (1-1-2) over the first two games, while Julien Brouillette, Tomas Kundratek and Kevin Marshall all have recorded one assist each.
Playoff Firsts:
C Mike Carman netted his first career playoff goal with his Game One tally on Friday at WB/Scranton. D Kevin Marhsall, playing in his first two Calder Cup Playoff games last weekend, recorded his first postseason assist on Saturday. RW Garrett Mitchell's goal in Game Two was also his first playoff goal.
Among the D-Leaders:
D Patrick McNeill's two points (1-1-2) in the two weekend games ranks him tied for second among AHL defensemen in postseason scoring.
Penalty Shot Allowed:
The BEARS were assessed a postseason penalty shot against for the first time since April 19, 2008. The opponent was also Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (Nathan Smith unsuccessful against Frederic Cassivi).
