Bears drop fourth-consecutive series
The Yakima Bears lost 6-3 to the Eugene Emeralds Friday night at Yakima County Stadium. The Bears finished the homestand 2-3 against the Emeralds, which is the fourth-straight loss in a series for team.
After Bears starter Cody Wheeler tossed two scoreless innings, including escaping the first when he loaded the bases with one out, Austin Platt struggled in relief. Platt allowed four runs on four hits in the third inning to put the Bears down 4-0 on the scoreboard. The Bears scored one run on a Jimmy Comerota sacrifice fly to plate Joe Loftus in the bottom of the third. The Emeralds go that run back in the top of the fourth inning when the lead-off man reached on a single and then scored on a one-out triple. The Bears rallied to score two runs with two outs in the seventh inning, as Wagner Mateo came home on wild pitch and Kevin Medrano plated Danny Poma with a triple to cut the Emeralds lead to 5-3. Eugene got a pinch-hit home run from Dane Phillips in the eighth inning to finish the scoring.
The loss went on Platt, who fell to 0-3 after allowing five earned runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings. Blake Forslund gave up the home run in the eighth and Victor Acosta pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Bears were outhit 10-8, with seven different Yakima batters collecting at least one hit. The only player with more than one hit was Steven Rodriguez, who went 2-for-4.
The Bears are now 7-10 in the second half of the Northwest League season after winning the first half. The team takes to the road Saturday for the start of a five-game series at Vancouver. First pitch Saturday is set for 7:05. Right-handed pitcher Blake Perry is expected to start the series opener against right-handed pitcher Javier Avendano in a matchup of staff aces.
