
Bears Chew Up Patriots, 7-2

Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 7-2 in front of 3,327 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, first baseman Tom Hage drew a walk and designated hitter Danny Clyburn followed with a two-run home run to left field to make the score 2-0.
Newark added another three runs in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Paul Esposito singled to right and advanced to second when left fielder Rickey Henderson drew a walk. Shortstop Eddy Martinez singled to left to drive in Esposito and the runners advanced to second and third on the throw. Hage was intentionally walked to load the bases and catcher Jason Torres followed with an RBI single to score Henderson. Third baseman Bryan Britt's sacrifice fly scored Martinez to make the score 5-0.
Somerset designated hitter Greg Blosser hit a solo home run (2) over both right field walls in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
Newark answered with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Center fielder Mike Piercy led off with a walk and was erased from the bases on a fielder's choice that allowed right fielder Al Benjamin to reach base. Benjamin came around to score on a triple by Esposito and Henderson followed with an RBI double to give the Bears a six run lead.
Somerset added a run on an RBI double by center fielder Michael Warner in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 7-2 final score.
Newark starter Matt Wagner (1-0) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on nine hits and three strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Patriots starter Mike Oquist (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings pitched.
The Somerset Patriots 2003 Season presented by Ford will continue on the road against the Atlantic City Surf and will return home on Friday, May 16th for a weekend series with the Long Island Ducks. Friday, May 16th includes entertainment from Myron Noodleman presented by Miller Lite.
